Research and Clinical Interests
IBC-Focused Research
My specific area of clinical expertise is the treatment of patients with IBC, triple negative breast cancer, and BRCA associated cancers. While I was at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), my referral base was mainly community doctors and doctors in academia who sent me patients specifically for the trials I developed, and I have started a similar pattern of referrals at DFCI. My current clinical activities include attending on the Medical Oncology inpatient service at BWH two to four weeks per year, and seeing patients in the ambulatory clinic at DFCI four half-day sessions per week. I am often asked to give talks to trainees about these topics and to speak at different meetings on various aspects of breast cancer treatment and research. I conducted the first study to evaluate the uptake of prophylactic BSO in Latinas with BRCA1/2 mutations and we showed for the first time a high uptake of BSO compared to other minorities. I also conducted the first known clinical trial that prospectively tested the hypothesis that HER2 targeted therapies may be safely administered in patients with mildly reduced cardiac function, and the results of this trial are commonly used to guide clinical decisions related to the care of these patients
